Music Technology
I am an experienced music teacher and workshop leader for all ages and abilities, based in the Portsmouth/Southampton/Gosport area. I take a strongly facilitative approach and I work with students to identify personal goals. These goals may be to take exam grades, to play with friends, or to learn a specific music style. There are no mistakes, just exploration and learning!
I aim to provide lessons which are engaging and fun, and which provide a strong foundation of musicianship and knowledge. I am patient and enthusiastic and I have a wide interest in different musical styles. I use a range of strategies adapted to learners' unique styles and interests.
I teach using a variety of methods tailored to the needs of individual students, including elements of Kodaly, Suzuki, and Dalcroze methods. Above all I believe learning is fun, and I help students to reach their goals and to enjoy the unique experience of making music.
I focus on working with mainstream students and students with Special Educational Needs. I am a qualified teacher (QTLS) with a Music Degree (BA Hons, Cambridge), PhD in music (University of Birmingham), and MSc in Developmental Psychology (Sheffield Hallam University).

Music has huge benefits for young people both in terms of developing specific musical skills and also social, communication, organisational, technological, and many other skills.
Flexibility, creativity, team-working and problem-solving are all key skills for equipping and preparing young people to study, work, to thrive, to socialise and develop connections, and to enjoy life fully. Playing music with others fosters all these skills. It develops a sense of responsibility and creative excitement and supports the development of internal motivation and resilience.
Young people play instruments, creative music, use music technology and podcasting in a supportive, exploratory environment in which there are no mistakes, just learning outcomes.
Special Education podcasting and radio
I am also an innovative broadcast media and podcast workshop leader focusing on music technology and special needs music education and radio workshops. I have extensive experience of working with children and adults with learning difficulties and special needs. I have worked as a teacher in further and higher education settings and as a project manager and workshop leader in primary and secondary schools.
I have delivered a range of music, radio communication, and confidence interventions. I set up a radio and music studio at a Further Education College for students with Special Educational Needs. This resource supported the development of students with ECH plans. Student were empowered to create high quality radio. Programmes were produced and presented by students, developing their skills in music, communication, and ICT. This innovative programme of work also included joint sessions developed with speech therapists and art therapists.
I am currently delivering a number of Southampton City Council funded music projects with SOCO in community organisations for adults with a range of learning difficulties and disabilites. These focus on the joy of music and empowering participants to play instruments, form bands, and create original material.
